My home is a large 17th century farmhouse and converted barn located in Saddleworth, just to the north east of Oldham in the foothills of the Southern Pennines. It is set in an acre of land with mains electricity, a private water supply, septic tank drainage, and oil-fired heating plus a multifuel stove.

The site is at an altitude of 900 feet on a sloping hillside, the house being set into it with the major axis on a north-south bearing. The southern end is open above the local tree line in the garden, so there is a good aspect to the sun for solar power panels and thermal collectors. The surrounding countryside is open moorland fields, with the prevailing wind from the northerly quarter, and as the land on the western side is also above the treeline this should be a good location for a turbine, with an adjacent garage below to house the control gear.

As the water source is a spring there are additional possibilities for a ground source heatpump and minihydro generator, but these are not the primary interest.

As I have broadband internet access, and extensive experience in computer applications, my intention is to add datalogging instrumentation to the energy systems and to upload their performance parameters to this website on a regular basis, together with environmental data from a weather station, to enable qualitative and quantitative analysis and to provide records relevant to a domestic integrated installation.

This a purely private undertaking, so there are no guarantees of data availability or continuity, but hopefully it will provide a useful contribution to demonstrate the sustainability of individual efforts to assist in the preservation of the planet's environment.
